Presentation Skills

Student developing presentation and public-speaking skills

Clear expression, self-control and lasting impact.

Speaking is not just about saying things — it is about embodying your thinking and giving it strength.

Within the Academic Development domain, under English for Academic Purposes, the “Presentation Skills” workshop helps students develop high-level oral communication skills that can be used directly in higher education and professional settings.

The objective is to help students speak with clarity, confidence, precision, and impact by combining intellectual rigor, structured communication, and a strong presence in front of an audience.

Far beyond improvisation or recitation, the workshop treats oral presentations as strategic and structured acts of communication. Speaking effectively means thinking before speaking, planning a message, adapting to an audience, and delivering ideas with clarity and purpose.

Students learn how to structure a presentation, engage listeners, manage their voice and body language, and communicate with credibility in a range of demanding situations: debates, interviews, project pitches, academic oral examinations, and formal presentations.

By the end of the workshop, students are able to build and deliver compelling oral presentations with confidence, precision, and presence — a vital skill across disciplines, careers, and leadership contexts.

Who Is This Workshop For?

This workshop is designed for students who want to:

  • Build or improve their public-speaking confidence;
  • Learn how to organize and express ideas clearly in front of an audience;
  • Prepare for oral exams, interviews, debates, or academic presentations;
  • Develop communication skills that are essential for leadership and collaboration.

It is suitable for students who are naturally comfortable speaking, as well as for those who feel anxious but are ready to improve through structured practice.

Seven Key Reasons to Develop This Skill

01. Because speaking is thinking out loud

Clear, structured speaking reflects clear, structured thinking.

02. Because higher education includes many oral assessments

Oral exams, presentations, defenses, and project pitches all require clarity, preparation, and control.

03. Because ideas have little impact when they are poorly communicated

Strong ideas need effective delivery in order to be heard, understood, and remembered.

04. Because persuasion depends on how you speak

Voice, tone, pace, posture, and audience awareness all influence how a message is received.

05. Because communication is a core professional skill

From meetings and interviews to negotiations and leadership roles, professional life requires strong verbal expression.

06. Because oral expression can be learned like any demanding discipline

Effective public speaking is not a gift. It is built through method, training, repetition, and feedback.

07. Because clarity and presence distinguish those who lead

Presentation skills help distinguish confident thinkers from silent executors.

What Are the Risks of Neglecting This Skill?

01. Difficulty expressing ideas effectively

Even strong ideas can lose their value when delivery is hesitant, unclear, or poorly structured.

02. Stage fright or stress becoming a major obstacle

Without training, speaking in front of others can create avoidance, anxiety, or loss of control.

03. Presentations that lack structure and impact

Without preparation, speeches can become scattered, repetitive, confusing, or difficult to follow.

04. Missed academic and professional opportunities

Interviews, discussions, group work, oral assessments, and selection processes can become disadvantages rather than opportunities.

05. Dependence on scripts or visual aids

Reading slides or memorizing lines can prevent genuine communication and reduce flexibility.

06. Weakened ability to collaborate and lead

Strong teams and leaders communicate clearly, adapt to others, and make their ideas understandable.

07. Losing a powerful tool for influence

Students who cannot communicate their thinking effectively may struggle to be heard, trusted, or taken seriously.

Skills Developed and Workshop Structure

The “Presentation Skills” workshop develops structured, engaging, and confident oral communication. It combines intellectual preparation — what to say — with expressive control — how to say it.

Students learn to:

  • Build the structure of a speech or presentation;
  • Use their voice and body language effectively;
  • Engage and adapt to different audiences;
  • Speak with clarity, confidence, and flow;
  • Use rhetorical tools to persuade or explain;
  • Manage stress, timing, and improvisation when needed.

Workshop Duration

The workshop includes a total of 45 hours, organized into 5 sessions of 9 hours each.

Each session includes 6 training periods, alternating between technical instruction, guided analysis of presentations, rehearsals and feedback, and live practice in real or simulated conditions.

This structure supports consistent progress and helps students build lasting habits of clarity, preparation, and presence.

Support and Guidance

This workshop follows a targeted approach, designed to develop specific speaking skills through structured practice, repetition, and precise feedback.

Students benefit from individualized tutoring and group coaching adapted to their level and goals.

  • Personalized feedback on delivery and structure;
  • Practical techniques to manage nerves and uncertainty;
  • Individual progress tracking;
  • Guidance to develop a personal speaking style;
  • An emphasis on genuine presence rather than performance tricks.

The objective is not simply to make students speak more. It is to help them communicate with greater clarity, confidence, and intellectual control.

What Is Expected From Students?

Presentation skills are built over time through trial, feedback, refinement, and regular practice.

Students are expected to:

  • Take an active role in their own progress;
  • Participate seriously in all practice activities;
  • Be open to feedback and willing to step outside their comfort zone;
  • Prepare between sessions and rehearse consistently;
  • View challenge and exposure as part of the learning process, not as failure;
  • Respect the workshop format and the feedback of peers and tutors.

Entry Requirements

A placement assessment is completed at the beginning of the program. Its purpose is not to judge the student, but to confirm that the workshop matches their current needs and to identify priorities for development.

The assessment looks at verbal expression, clarity of speech, confidence level, the ability to structure a spoken message, and the ability to adapt in real time.

Students do not need to be naturally confident speakers before joining. However, they should have a sufficient command of spoken English to understand instructions, express ideas, and take part in formal speaking activities.

The workshop is designed for students who are willing to practise, receive feedback, and gradually expose themselves to increasingly demanding speaking situations.

Regular preparation, active participation, and the willingness to refine one’s delivery are essential to benefit fully from the workshop.
